Reality TV Show Pitch Questions #1

Blog Category: LA, Reality TV Show Pitch, Hollywood — Blogged by: support on February 26, 2007 at 10:07 pm

I’m coming to LA to shoot a movie and reality show - low key-one man show - I’ll carry camera myself maybe. It will take place in August.

1. Is it too late to get some “film oriented” funds for documentary.

I heard it’s more money if you get some deal going before shooting then trying to sell later.

2. Can you recommend entertainment lawyer in Hollywood with 15-20 minutes free consultation - I want to know how to structure business in US.

3. After that short treatment you included what else do you send to production companies?

4. If production company is interested do they pay upfront or payments or after editing is done.

5. I’m starting project August 16th - is it too late to send to production companies??

6. Who should be approached first tv stations like independent film center???, sundance channel or production companies??

——————

Personally, I think all the power comes from having the show ready to go. They made decide to redo it, but they will understand the concept and what you bring to the table creatively. You also have much better negotiating power once it is an actual living, breathing show, rather than a concept.

I found this link: http://www.incorporatecalifornia.com/

Just be very careful what you reveal and even more careful about what you sign.

The sample treatment needs to be a thorough explanation of the show and give them an image of how it will look. The sample treatment is designed to get you a meeting with them, where you pitch your heart
out.

Whatever deal you get regarding payment is what you can negotiate. There are no rules or set practises — just whatever you can secure.

I would film it yourself, then put it out there on Youtube, channel101, etc. I believe that is the ‘new’ way to be discovered. If this project doesn’t hit, keep on going with the next and the next and the next until something finally does. The guys who did Chad Vader are a great example of this.

I feel for your project and the level of involvement you want to have, you need to film this yourself first, then send it out to all and sundry.

Matt

Is it possible that I can submit my concept to production companies in the US, whilst residing and living in Australia?

Is the process of proposing a new TV reality show to a production company and developing a test pilot expensive? How much did you spend for this process?

Does it mean if I propose a TV reality show and it becomes successful and is to be aired on TV, would I need to be the host of the show or play a role in it? Alternatively, would I become an executive producer or director or is that determined by the production company?

—————–

I wouldn’t discount Australian production companies. Myth Busters is Produced by Beyond Productions — a Sydney based company.
You can still submit an idea to the US production companies, however you would need to be willing to travel to the US if things picked up. As for a test pilot, it doesn’t need to be that great. They will remake it anyway, you are only doing that to help demonstrate the concept. A consumer DV camera would be fine.

The role you get to play in the show simply comes down to what you can negotiate. They won’t offer you anything — you would have to fight long and hard to maintain some involvement in the show.

Matt

Reality TV Show Pitch Questions #3

I recently moved to LA from Austin, TX to pursue my career aspirations. I am an up-and-coming film and tv Producer. Let  me know if you are in Hollywood and if you would have time to meet for lunch sometime. I am interested in writing my own e-book, and would love to get your advice in person - lunch is on me!

I’m going to purchase your e-book, but I have a question. Once the purchase is complete, am I able to download it on more than one computer?

I would like to purchase it right now, but I am at my office imac. Once I get home tonight I would like to be able to download the e-book on my laptop. Is that possible?

——————
That awesome about the move to LA. I admire anyone who packs up and does that.

Meeting up would be great, but it will have to wait just a little while. I’m currently out of LA and the plan is to return to LA around the end of March.

I know all about writing/marketing ebooks…

The ebook itself is actually just a website, so as long as you can access the internet, you can read it anywhere. This is also makes it very easy for me to update.

Matt

I just recently purchased a copy of your ebook online. What Im trying to find out is how long does it take to get my work registered and also in what format should it be written?

How long is the process of registering your work? What i mean is how long does it take to hear back from the WGA? Which form from the copyright website should i print?

———————

Registering with the WGA is very simple — just follow the steps at their website: www.wga.org
I also would recommend submitting a treatment for your show idea.

The registration process is very simple, you send in the forms along with payment and you get a WGA registration number for your script.

Reality TV falls into several categories, so you can choose treatment, TV show, etc. It really isn’t a big deal and while the WGA registration is great to have, you still have to be very careful about the release forms you may be asked to sign by a production company.

It is a great idea to register your idea, but keep in mind the production companies have their own release forms. I want sent one not so long ago and they basically tried to get the writer to sign over their ideas. Most people aren’t in the position to pay for litigation, so it really pays to be thorough with any agreement/release they want you to sign.

Some of them basically say you are giving them the right to take your idea, develop it without needing to offer you any type of financial reward.

The standard Production Company Submisson Release form

Blog Category: LA, Reality TV Show Pitch, Hollywood — Blogged by: support on February 27, 2007 at 12:10 am

NO IMPLIED CONTRACT
You agree that no obligation of any kind is assumed by ****** Productions or may be implied against ****** Productions by reason of you sending the Submission to ****** Productions and/or any review, report, discussions or negotiations ****** Productions may have or create concerning the Submission.
What is Protected and what are You Entitled To Compensation For?

You understand that ****** Productions may have in the past explored, may currently be in the process of exploring or may in the future explore programs and ideas generated by employees or other third parties that resemble the Submission. You understand that it is not uncommon for more than one individual or company to originate substantially similar ideas, independently. Given this understanding, you agree that you will not take any legal action against ****** Productions and you waive any right to bring a claim that ****** Productions misappropriated any ideas or portions of the Submission in any future ****** Productions programs or activities.

You acknowledge and agree that your entitlement to any compensation is subject to you and ****** Productions entering into a written contract (separate from this Agreement) signed by both parties related to the use by ****** Productions of the Submission. If ****** Productions uses the Submission, You understand that ****** Productions only has an obligation to get permission from You and to compensate You for those portions of the Submission that are communicated to ****** Productions in writing in sufficient detail that they are protected under copyright law or other intellectual property laws.

—-

Ok, so here is part of a fairly standard Submission release agreement. The first part is basically saying they can take your idea, develop it with someone else and you are not entitled to anything. The way around this is to register your complete idea with the WGA. No one ever signs away their right to litigation either.

The final part deals with writing in sufficient detail so that it is protected under copyright and intellectual proterty laws. This means the complete deal. Everything you have ever thought and written down about your show goes into this. It should be long and cover every possible angle, detail, etc, you can imagine.

A one paragraph about an idea cannot be copyrighted, but a well thought out, planned and detailed idea can. This is why I go on and on in the ebook about all the details, including the advertising, target audience, etc, etc. You simply have to know this stuff inside and out to have any chance.

If you are going to agree to something like this, make sure you have your full idea registered with the WGA and let them know that from the beginning — that you have a 100 page document registered with the WGA. They just assume (and in many cases are banking on) people are very unorganized, haven’t taken the time to develop their ideas in the first place and certainly haven’t taken the time to register them with the WGA.

Matt

Reality TV Show Pitch Questions #5

Blog Category: LA, Reality TV Show Pitch, Hollywood — Blogged by: support on February 28, 2007 at 9:22 pm

1. I have an excellent reality tv program idea that I’m in the process of putting together and shooting a demo for. Do you have any suggestions as far as once i have a complete demo, how i should go about getting it sold?

2. I have basically been procrastinating. The more I read the more I hear about people stealing your ideas. So that sort of puts a damper on it. Any advice?
—————

1. Making a demo — regardless of the quality — is a very good idea. If you have already worked on the 100 page+ outline for your show including *everything* possible, the next step is to put something together, so they can visualize the concept. You will also be showcasing your talent and they will have something to go on when you ask for involvement in the show as a writer, etc.

You simply pitch it the same way, only you indicate in your initial enquiry that you have a filmed version of the idea.

2. Procrastination is something that gets to all of us at some stage. I’m a big fan of writing down lists and breaking things down to the smallest parts possible. It is much easier to check off smaller tasks one by one, than to go all out and try and complete the entire thing.

Break down things into smaller pieces and remain focussed on your final goal — preparing, writing and ultimately presenting the pitch for your Reality TV Show idea should be something you want to do.

I can also recommend a great ebook called: Breathe Your Limitations Away, The Transcendence Technology Liberation Breath Proces by Wellington Rodriguez. You can download it at: www.marinerblue.com/byla.pdf

Martha Stewart was Better than Donald Trump.

Blog Category: LA, Reality TV Show Pitch, Hollywood — Blogged by: support on February 28, 2007 at 9:32 pm

With Reality TV it looks as if Donald Trump is the champ. Unfortunately Donald Trump’s depiction of corporate America is so far from the truth that it is no wonder anyone watches that show all. Martha Stewart’s show was much better in that it was more in line with reality. After all we are talking about reality TV aren’t we? Please click here to keep reading this article…
